Memorial Day Camping

On Saturday we prepped and packed so that on Sunday as soon as we came home from church all we had to do was load the cooler from the fridge and pile into the cars and head out. It was a good thing that we were prepared because we didn't have much time once we arrived.

We got the tents set up.

Firewood gathered.
I love how Courtney is working so hard and Mallory can see that she got caught.

Dad and Kevin got a roaring fire going which was great because then this rolled in.

It rained and hailed and POURED for awhile. The weather took a break for about 45 minutes during which were were able to roast some hot dogs and a couple s'mores. We were also able to do some rearranging of sleeping bags. The kids had dove into their tent and managed to get a bunch of stuff wet, plus we discovered that that tent was leaking, not a good idea to have 3 kids in a leaking 2 man tent. but everyone was fed and had a dry place to sleep by the time that the second wave hit. The Rain did stop about 9:30-10, but the draw of a warm sleeping bag was too much at that point. Somewhat disappointing as sitting around the campfire is one of my favorite parts of camping. :( There will be more trips this summer.

The morning dawned beautiful!
At least that is what I was told. I slept in a bit after having been up with Lily in the night.
This is what I woke up to:
Mmmm leftover doughnuts are way better when heated up over the fire.

We did pretty good at gathering up all the things we needed, but did forget one important item. We left the pancake griddle on the stove at home.

IMPROVISE!

No, we did not break it to use it, it was already lying on the ground.

Dad, Kevin, Amanda and Steve headed out to shoot ground squirrels
While out they saw a brand new baby antelope.

Mom and I had fun staying at camp with the little ones. They went on a scavenger hunt and then I took them on a hike while mom graded papers.

This is a Melissa Blue Butterfly. Cool huh...
Before calling it a day and heading back to town the kids got a chance at shooting too.

CAN'T WAIT TO GO AGAIN!!

  1. I'm so glad I didn't stay home to grade those papers. I did notice however how much like campfire smoke the kid's papers smelled when I got them back into the classroom.
